WHEN does travel insurance start?
That’s the £1,400 question facing Steve Walker after his claim for cancelling a trip to Corfu was denied.
Steve bought insurance on April 20th to cover him for a year from May 23, the day he was due to travel.
But partner Jean Gelsthorpe fell ill with appendicitis, and on May 1 a doctor said they would be unable to travel.
His insurers turned down his claim in a letter which confusingly states he was covered for unavoidable cancellations before departure. But the ‘period of insurance’ didn’t start until May 23.
A SPOKESWOMAN for the Association of British insurers said almost all travel policies include cancellation cover and Steve had a good case. We’ll keep you posted.
