A HUSBAND accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death said he was “shocked” when he was arrested on suspicon of her murder .
George Gallagher, aged 56, denies stabbing his wife Julie, 41, to death at her home in Foljambe Road, Rotherham, some time between the early hours of Thursday March 25 and the morning of Saturday March 27 last year.
Giving evidence at Sheffield Crown Court, Gallagher told jurors he was on the bus home from Doncaster when he received a phone call telling him Julie’s body had been carried out of her home, police were ‘everywhere’, and the house had been cordoned off.
“I just didn’t know how to take it,” he said.
“I thought the best thing to do was to go to the police station.”
Gallagher went to Main Street police station in Rotherham - where he was arrested on suspicion of his wife’s murder. “I was shocked,” he said. “Why would I kill her? I love the lass.” Asked if he still had feelings for her he said: “Yeah. I still do.”
Gallagher said on the nights in question he’d had a fish supper, gone home to Eldon Road, Eastwood, and not left the house again. The next day he’d spent the afternoon in the pub, walked home, and watched television, he said.
Gallagher, who denies murder, admitted texting Julie’s phone on the morning her body was found to tell her he had left two bags of clothes for her, as requested.
The trial continues.
