Academic is first woman in the UK to be given title

AN ACADEMIC from the University of Sheffield has become the first woman in the country to be made a professor in the field of emergency medicine.

Prof Suzanne Mason, from the School of Health and Related Research, has been awarded the title which denotes the highest academic rank within an institution.

Her research interests focus on emergency medicine and care and include evaluating complex interventions in urgent care.

A trial to evaluate the role of community paramedic practitioners - who manage older people dialling 999 with minor conditions - and an investigation into waiting times in the emergency department are among the many projects she has been involved with.

Prof Mason joined the University of Sheffield as a senior clinical lecturer in 2001 and was promoted to Reader in 2007.

She divides her time between the university and working as a consultant at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust emergency department.

The mum-of-two, said: "I am delighted with my promotion.

"I hope that the achievement will show other women, both within the specialty and also within UK academia, that breaking through the 'glass ceiling' is possible alongside raising a family."
