They still don’t get it do they?
Watching the Home Affairs Select committee into the Rotherham abuse scandal live it was apparent those being questioned had no concept of what is required to prove one’s adequacy in a role.
It’s not the trying hard that matters (commissioning and writing reports, chairing meetings, organising seminars, setting up specialist groups) it’s the achievement of results. Full stop. And we’re not talking days or weeks of delay whilst the necessity of establishing facts might have to preclude immediate action, the suspected criminal action unfortunately continuing in the meantime, but years, How could anybody carry on a normal family life knowing that even a single child was being abused? In my experience in private industry for 50 years failure was not an option. No allowance was made for being a conscientious trier. The inadequate individual was dismissed or moved to a position within their capability.
Yesterday’s performers (as opposed to the Committee) were chillingly unruffled and articulate. One wonders whether these qualities were deemed more important in their appointments than zeal. It seems unlikely that seniority – next in line irrespective of ability – was a consideration here.
Let’s hope the mooted emergency legislation to allow the removal of elected individuals, presumably not limited to PCCs, becomes reality very quickly. Where to draw the line in who to ‘prosecute’ is difficult. Sweeping the whole lot away would delay the remedial action we’re all hoping to see. The claim by these top individuals that they are part of the solution is also true; their dismissals would send out shockwaves that might not only benefit many more abused kids but set new standards in public service.
