FOOTBALLERS have broken a world record and raised thousands of pounds for charity by holding the longest-ever five-a-side match.
Teams from Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Wickersley Sports College competed for 43 hours at the Rotherham school and have so far raised £4,800 for the air ambulance.
Wickersley College maths teacher Martin Tipper said: “Many supporters came to see the game at all hours of the day, bringing food supplies and words of encouragement for the players. These supporters witnessed more than 1,300 goals between the two teams.”
The indoor match was played after a previous record attempt in June on an outdoor pitch had to be called off after 28 hours due to wet weather.
The footballers are still appealing for donations.
