SHOULD Sheffield have an airport?
It’s a debate which has never gone away, even though the airport closed for business in 2008.
The problem is that many people, especially in the business community, feel a city the size of Sheffield should have an airport.
That way we would truly compete with our neighbours, Leeds and Nottingham, both of which are served by airports.
But is there a commercial case? A mystery bidder thinks so and his interest has stirred the debate again.
Enter Central MP Paul Blomfield, who this week backed calls for an independent public inquiry to establish if Sheffield City Airport could be viable.
We support his call and hope such an inquiry would once and for all determine what should happen to the airport site.
If all parties agree to accept the verdict, the inquiry will have resolved one of the most perplexing issues of the decade and for that reason it should happen.
Changing faces will change lives
ONE of the factors that most affect one’s confidence is the way we look.
And disfigurements to faces are one of the most visible things that will have the greatest effect.
In Sheffield there are between 35,000 and 40,000 people with some form of facial impairment who could benefit from support and help.
The decision by the Changing Faces charity to set up its first regional support centre in Sheffield, thanks to a £250,000 lottery grant is a welcome move.
If, as a result of the decision, people can access professional help and advice and even start on the road to having any impairment rectified, then that will go a long way to helping people to start rebuilding their confidence.
The value of that help is immeasurable in helping to transform someone’s confidence and indeed approach to life.
Giving gift of life
THE British Transplant Games will arrive in Sheffield, for the second time in four years.
Thousands of athletes and families will descend on the city to highlight how organ donation can transform people’s lives.
The aim will be to persuade thousands more people to sign onto the organ donor register.
By doing so, you could be helping others to live a life they can only dream of.
