A golden year as Maltby Brass Band lands Yorkshire title
THEY'RE top brass!
Maltby Miners' Welfare Brass Band have scooped top prize in another competition.
The band won the Yorkshire Area 4th Section Championships in Bradford and will now go on to represent Yorkshire at the National Championships in Harrogate in September.
The band were also promoted to the Third Section - and all in the year which marks the 25th anniversary of the miners' strike.
Band spokesman and cornet player Christine Goddard said: "There are a lot of smiling faces about - it's just brilliant. We're all still flabbergasted.
"Last year was a good one for us - we finished third - but 2009 has been a golden year.
"Our members come from a lot of different backgrounds and are aged from 14 to 70 something. But we all have one thing in common; a love of brass band music."
Christine, a business adviser, from McKenzie Way Kiveton Park, said the band, like many in South Yorkshire, grew up around the local pit.
"Sadly as we are all aware that the industry has largely disappeared," she said.
"Thankfully Maltby still has a working pit and the band continues to have strong links with the NUM and is regularly seen at functions organised by the Yorkshire Area."
The band meet for a weekly practice at the Miners' Welfare Institute on Muglet Lane.
