A DJ saved my life...

Have your say

It’s the little things that keep you going.

Or, in Aung San Suu Kyi’s case, the little things plus one great big, hairy thing called Dave Lee Travis.

Turns out the DJ I grew up giggling with on the radio, the Hairy Monster known to collapse into uncontrollable laughter if something particularly tickled his fancy, kept Aung San’s spirits up during all the years she was under house imprisonment by the Burmese military junta.

This resilient woman who showed immense courage in her fight for democratic rights for her country described DLT as her ‘lifeline’ when she met him in the flesh on her first visit to the UK in 24 years this week.

How incredibly humbled he must have felt on discovering that he, a mere DJ filling the airwaves of the World Service with light-hearted burble about pop music plus a few gags, was actually helping a modern-day heroine stay strong in the bleakest of times.
