FIRST buses in Sheffield will be running normally this weekend after another planned strike was called off.
Industrial action had been called by drivers' union Unite over alleged 'harsh' discipline at First's Olive Grove depot.

But an agreement was reached over disciplinary issues yesterday in talks between First South Yorkshire managing director, Bob
Hamilton, and Unite bosses.

The strike was cancelled after Wednesday's announcement that a planned strike on Remembrance Sunday had been abandoned because many people would travel by bus to take part in memorial ceremonies across Sheffield.

Mr Hamilton said: "This is very positive news and we are glad all industrial action planned for this weekend has now been cancelled."

Strikes planned for next Thursday and again on Sunday November 15 are scheduled to go ahead. More talks will be held next Tuesday.

Agreement reached but strikes to continue next week. Am I missing something here?

I wish I could be a fly on the wall at the "talks" on Tuesday or, any union/management "talks" from any industry, just to see what they talk about for hours on end.

It certainly makes you wonder as Unite are not very forthcoming with any information.

The reason UNITE are not very 'forthcoming with info' is because the Star choses not to approach them! Instead speaking to first and printing one side of the story. Shame as every knows theres 2 sides to every story.

As for why the strike is off, well that would be because the agreement was that the management would 'back down' on discipline issues currently given out to 5 drivers if the strikes were called off, hence call off Saturday yet leave the remaining dates as further negotiation is needed.

Easy enough to understand and sure it makes sense to everyone!

I think the union is just mucking the travelling public about and I've now lost patience with them. There are always these statements about not wanting to inconvenience the public - but who the hell do they think is going to be inconvenienced? Get it sorted!
