Published Date: 21 November 2008
EXTRA trams and an expanded network of tracks in Sheffield have not been written off despite rejection of Government funding.
The plans have been resurrected in a Draft Tram Strategy for 2008 to 2021, published by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, and passengers are invited to give their views.

The organisation, which co-ordinates public transport in the cou
nty, said extra capacity could be necessary in coming years.

The document holds open the possibility of expanding the network in the future subject to funding being available.

I agree these routes should grow, this is decent public transport, the issues are the polluting buses that think they are allowed just to pull out even though I haven't stopped to let them go! Trams by far out class the buses! So a route extension I agree totall with!
What you all reckon guys and gals?

As long as they connect places people actually go to then it should be a benefit, no doubt it'll be where the planners want to go that gets done.

as long as they provide a proper service for the people of sheffield rotherham barnsley at an affordable fare with connecting vehicles to operate in the remote places where the tram cannot run.the only problem is who pays fot the infrastructure, everyone, who gets access to use it at present, the minority.rock on.

horlicks makes a good point. The interconnection of South Yorkshire centres (and poss Chesterfield) should be the primary objective of expanding the routes.

The original routes were planned to shift shoppers from one shopping centre to another - pointless really as they did nothing to ease the volume of traffic caused by the daily commute.

Planners should leave room for future tram lines. The loop to the Hallamshire, Weston Park and Childrens seemed a good idea parking is rubbish. It's going to work best where people don't have cars or parking issues i.e. Ecclesall Road or London Road. The Tram-trains are interesting a park and ride from the M1, Kiveton Park or Orgreave maybe. A monorail would be cool down the Moor like at Alton Towers. What happened to the cable cars - station to Victoria quays?

Will the steel from the tracks be bought from Sheffield? Can someone remind me where it was bought from for the current tram system?

Should have carried on from Hemsworth TO Jordanthorpe, Batemoor, Lowedges, Bradway and possibly Totley

I totally agree with you!

They can get rid of the not reliable purple route service and replace it with a red route service every 10 mins between Dyche lane, Jordanthorpe and Meadowhall via City Centre!

There should also be a park and ride car park and a machine, where you can purchase tickets!

This would be ideal to cut the traffic down in Woodseats!

I'd like to see three new lines:

A loop around the Hospitals and Broomhill, which I think would ease a lot of the car traffic created by the hospitals and students getting to university

A loop though Stannington and Loxley, making these feel more than suburbs of Sheffield than independent villages

Finally, an extension from Nunnery to the Waverley/Orgreave development site along the old rail route, and possibly through Handsworth and into Treeton or Catcliffe. This could late be extended into Rotherham rail/bus interchange via Rotherham General Hospital, and a spur taken from this route through Rother Valley Country Park (soon to be the site of a massive leisure complex of course) towards the Halfway terminus.

Don't forget that is the South Yorkshire Supertram, so the a route to Rotherham should definitely be explored, as should the possibility of street-running in Barnsley at the end of the tram-trains.
