IT'S been a much-loved park for generations of Sheffielders.
From end of war celebrations to 1970s rock concerts, Weston Park has played a part in the lives of thousands of people.
But whole swathes of its history are a mystery.
Now cultural planning and development agency Eventus is running a living history project about Weston Park and is looking for local people to share their memories of events there.
Project manager Amy Horton said: “This is a living history project that runs alongside the council's regeneration of the park.
“We have been collecting stories and photographs about the park at various events and exhibitions over the summer, which we will use to create a booklet documenting the history of the park.
“We are still looking to gather more information and thought Star readers might be able to help. We have got pictures of rock concerts in the park in the 1970s, but we would like to hear stories from the people that went along to these events.”
Other key events in the park include the VE celebrations after the Second World War and remembrance day parades. Then there are the other, everyday visits, which provide special memories for so many people.
Amy added: “We would be interested in collecting stories, photos, press cuttings or simply general details about when and where some events took place. We also want to hear more general stories about the park over the years, relating to people, places and events.
“The areas we are particularly interested in include the ‘Dolebusters’ events that took place in Weston Park in the 1980s. Apparently people like Criminal Sex, Flexible Penguins, Hole In The Wall, Spoon, Pulp, The Wealthy Texans, The Masons and Henry Normal performed. We want to know more, especially who performed and who organised the events.
“We’d also like to find out more about rock concerts in the 1970s and Music in the Park. The Abbeydale orchestra is believed to be the only full orchestra to play in Weston Park. We want to know if anyone has played in this orchestra in the park.
“We’d love to know more memories of the park during the Second World War. Were areas of Weston Park used to grow vegetables?
“Other events include Remembrance Sunday services and sporting events in the park, for example fun runs for charity.
“The tennis player Roger Taylor used to practise on the Weston Park tennis courts - have any other famous people been seen visiting the park?
“Maybe people have stories of any former features of the park that stand out. We’ve heard of sculptures on the lawns outside the art gallery. We’d like to see photographs if anyone has any as well as close up images of metal work on the bandstand.”
