TRAM and bus services are today suffering major disruption after police closed off a Sheffield road because of fears that gas cylinders could explode.
Police were alerted to the potential problem by firefighters called to a garage on Woodbourn Road, between Attercliffe and Darnall, at around 11am.

They were dealing with a car fire at Don Motors when they were informed that cylinders of acetylene gas, used for welding, are stored there.

Because the cylinders can explode if they get too hot, firefighters will have to be on stand-by at the garage for the next 24 hours.

Businesses in the area have been evacuated and a 200 metre safety cordon has been set up around the garage, and buses and trams were ordered to stop running on safety grounds.

Supertram has announced that for the next 24 hours it will run services between Meadowhall and the Arena and from Middlewood and Herdings Park only as far as Cricket Inn Road, Wybourn.

And as per usual our "In touch " police force played a blinder !Cordoned off Woodbourn Road from Staniforth Road so all traffic passing Broad Oaks had to go on Attercliffe .Those of us who use the short cut through Broad Oaks and down Jessel Street were turned around at the end of Jessel Street by two police officers .Wouldn't it have made more sense to have placed the officers at the entrance to Broad Oaks ? Evidently not ! And two officers stood there doing nothing beggars belief !
