A CRACKDOWN on rogue taxis in Sheffield city centre led to 136 vehicles being stopped for checks over a five-month period.
Some 199 drivers were also checked to ensure they were properly licensed, insured and fit to drive.

Sheffield Council officers issued 93 warnings, 36 notices to improve vehicles, and three cautions against drivers for minor breaches of rules and r
egulations.

More serious action was taken against 38 drivers, who had their individual licences reviewed by the council and five were prosecuted.

Two admitted not being insured and were fined £150 and £50. Three drivers were fined £340, £360 and £100 respectively after being caught plying for trade while unlicensed.

The crackdown took place between last November and this March.

How many of the more serious 38 drivers kept their licence, 93 out of 199 got warnings, seems like the licensing needs tightening up.

Does this include taxis with chesterfield borough council on them ?
I regularly see taxis of this flavour being driven in a dangerous way along heeley and woodseats. Often overtaking on the contraflow when the lane is closed, and pushing in at the front of the traffic lights in an outrageously agressive manoeuvre

That is rediculas, that percentage is far too high.
It warrents a total check on all registered Taxis if you ask me, with Licences being revoked for the more serious breaches.
If it was a buisness it would be closed down, even politions on the make are now having to get their act together and the percentage of them at it is lower than this lot.

I see more and more Taxis driving dangerously and illegally, mainly from the biggest firm in the city.
When they get reported to the council nothing gets done.
The fines should be bigger and checks performed more often.
I have heard from a friend in the trade that most taxi drivers have had their test taken by someone who has taken the test before and find the tester easier to understand (take from that what you will)
