AROUND 40 residents packed into a Sheffield church last night for a public meeting held to discuss a proposed new township on the border of Sheffield and Rotherham.
The site at Waverley has been earmarked for up to 4,600 homes.

But Maurice Littlewood, chairman of the Handsworth Community Forum, raised concerns about how it would impact on residents in surrounding areas such as Aston, Brinsworth, Catcliffe, Darnall, Orgreave, Treeton and Tinsley.

He organised a public meeting at Handsworth Methodist Church and invited residents and representatives from Rotherham and Sheffield Councils and proposed developers UK Coal.

Around 40 residents attended and Mr Littlewood said: "There were a number of speakers and councillors from Sheffield assured us that any plans submitted for the site would receive the closest possible scrutiny."

Residents are now planning to launch an action group.
