HUNDREDS of operations and clinics were cancelled in Sheffield's hospitals today after flooding caused chaos in the city.
Patients due to have surgery at the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire are being asked not to attend the hospitals as all planned operations have been postponed.

All outpatients clinics are cancelled at the Northern and Hallamshire hospitals,
as well as at the city's maternity unit, the Jessop Wing and at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.

But cancer patients due to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy today at Weston Park Hospital are asked to attend if it is safe for them to do so.

Sheffield Children's Hospital has cancelled all non-urgent surgery this afternoon because of fears that its power supply could be disrupted by the floods. But outpatient appointments were continuing as normal.

Leisure centres, museums, courts and theatres across Sheffield were also all closed today in the wake of yesterday's floods.

The English Institute of Sport, Don Valley Stadium, iceSheffield and Hillsborough Leisure Centre have all closed because of a power cut.

Bosses feared the ice could melt at iceSheffield and were working hard to get the electricity back on.

Ponds Forge, Concord Sports Centre and Sheffield City Hall are open.
Steve Brailey, chief executive of Sheffield International Venues, which runs the facilities, said: "None of our venues suffered flooding but some have lost power due to flooding at an electricity sub station.

"As a result we have had to close some of our facilities. We are working with the suppliers to get power restored and will let our customers know when the venues re-open."

Sheffield Theatres have confirmed that all shows at the Crucible and Lyceum tonight have been cancelled.

At the Lyceum, Opera North were due to perform Verdi's Rigoletto, while there were Sheffield Children's Festival events planned for both the Crucible main house and Studio.

However, a spokesman for the theatres said that on the advice of both the police and city council, all shows would not be going ahead.

Sheffield Crown Court was closed today and Sheffield Magistrates' Court was holding only a skeleton service dealing with urgent remands.

The PDSA animal charity, which runs a PetAid hospital for people unable to afford vets fees, was operating an emergency service only today due to floodwater swamping the surrounding roads and car park.

Staff at the Newhall Road-based animal hospital are asking people to rearrange their appointments by calling 0114 243 3232.
Keleham Island Museum was closed today and shut until further notice.
