A SHEFFIELD man was rescued from his burning home this morning after firefighters found him slumped unconscious on his bedroom floor.
The 52-year-old had suffered burns to his upper body and lost consciousness after inhaling smoke when his bed went up in flames as he slept.
His wife managed to escape from the burning house on Wheatfield Crescent, Shiregreen, and told firefighte
rs her husband was trapped inside.
A fire crew did a full sweep of the house and found him collapsed on the bedroom floor after he had managed to get out of the burning bed.
The man and woman are both smokers and it is believed one of them dropped a cigarette while smoking in bed, which smouldered away before setting fire to the bedding.
The man has now regained consciousness but the extent of his burns are not yet known.
Firefighters discovered there were no smoke alarms fitted in the property which could have alerted them to the blaze before it became so severe.
It is believed the bedding smouldered away for some time before it eventually went up in flames.
Dave Green, of Elm Lane fire station, said: "It's well documented that smoking in bed is a regular cause of house fires.
"This incident shows how dangerous this can be."
The blaze broke out just before 3am and was dealt with by two crews of firefighters from Elm Lane fire station.
The cause has been recorded as accidental.
