A KEEN gardener who sat in his greenhouse after a row with his wife was killed by paraffin heater fumes, an inquest heard.
Shaun Bisby sent a message saying he would go back inside later in the evening after spending the day on his allotment behind his house on Harold Avenue, Lundwood, Barnsley.

He was found slumped lifeless in a garden chair the following morning whe
n one of his daughters took him a cup of tea.

A Sheffield inquest heard Mr Bisby had gone out to the allotment in the morning of February 16 after falling out with his wife Lesley.

The 39-year-old's daughters had taken him cups of tea throughout the day.

Coroner Chris Dorries said on the last occasion one of the girls found him in his poly-tunnel greenhouse holding an airgun that he used to shoot rats.

Mr Dorries said: "He said he would be in later when the garden fires he had lit had died down.

"The family went to bed early and woke up earlier than usual on the Sunday.

"One daughter went out with a cup of tea and came back saying she'd had no response from him. Lesley Bisby went out and realised he was dead."

The poly-tunnel was warmed by two paraffin heaters, he added.

A post mortem examination revealed Mr Bisby died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mr Dorries recorded an verdict of accidental death and issued a warning about the odourless, tasteless and colourless gas dubbed 'the silent killer'.

He said: "I'm satisfied Mr Bisby has been overcome by the fumes, or he's fallen asleep naturally and been overcome, it would have the same effect.

"The word accident absolutely sums up how he died, I'm quite satisfied he didn't mean to die during the night.

"Carbon monoxide poisoning is a real danger.

"Mr Bisby was sitting in his greenhouse minding his own business and the fumes sent him to his death.

"A lot of people use heaters in greenhouses, garden sheds and garages, especially during winter, and unless people ensure there is proper ventilation they could lose their life as well.

"This is a warning all coroners have to repeat every year, and maybe it will save someone else's life."
