POLICE in Sheffield swooped on clubs and anti-social kids last night in a massive operation to rid the city of violent crime.
Full story, reaction and more in The Star tomorrow, Monday, November 23, 2009.

Over 300 South Yorkshire police officers took to Sheffield's crime hotspots armed with special powers to search young people for concealed knives and weapons.

Operation Portcullis resulted in 24 arrests, including a man wanted for 10 robberies.

Another arrest recovered a quantity of class A drugs and £6,000 in cash, while three men were arrested for conspiracy to rob a local businessman.

Other arrests were made for possession of class A drugs and cannabis, with two people arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The operation was centred around three Sheffield nightspots - Club Zion and Club Fortuna, in Attercliffe, and Club Vibe, on Charter Square, Sheffield.

Young people in the areas were taken to West Bar police station to be put through hi-tech safety arches which detect hidden weapons.
Officers took 82 young people from the streets and clubs to the search facility.

Social workers and police officers also toured three of Sheffield's most crime-ridden neighbourhoods, Broomhall, Burngreave and Upperthorpe, in efforts to curb the rise of gang culture among youngsters.

Kids at risk of causing violence, drinking or being sexually exploited were taken to a "place of safety" and collected by their parents.
The operation was carried out as part of the Government's Tackling Knives Action Programme.

Chief Superintendent Paul Broadbent, strategic commander for Operation Portcullis, said the evening was "incredibly successful".

It's a bit late to be rounding kids up in areas like Upperthorpe after local youths have committed murders, serious assaults and other crimes connected to drug dealing for the past 10 years. Too little too late.

And your remedy 2009blade, just leave it ???.

I think ANY action such as this should be roundly applauded.

The police have identified the problem(s), and are doing something about it. It may be 'later' than you had liked, but the fact is the police are acting, and good on 'em.

I just get the impression, you'd moan whatever happens !.

Quite right. Proactive policing is the way forward - The reason that these oiks carry weapons & drugs with seeming impunity is because they are not challenged.

This needs to be repeated ad infinitum.

Woodseats Neil. You miss the point of my comment. I remember the Cohen brothers when they were 14. They used to hang around the estate being a nuisance and they went on to become Sheffield biggest drug dealers responsible for many crimes including the conspiracy to murder when the taxi driver was executed on their orders.Fact. Michael Chattoo another local boy awaiting trail for murder.Fact.Barrington Broomfield awaiting trail for murder.Fact. All local youths. The Upperthorpe pub shooting when an innocent drinker got shot because he made a comment to the local yobs. No one ever prosecuted.Everyone in the area knew who had done it. There are many others. So when I say it's 10 years too late taking such action , then it is because the facts are there. No moans just plain fact.

If everyone knew who did it 2009Blade why did you not tell crimestoppers anonymously? As for rounding them up in these areas its about time. Problem is they move out to the suburbs when the heat is on.

MASSIVE OPERATION AND ONLY 24 ARRESTS. WOW THAT'S GONNA MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO THE STREETS OF SHEFFIELD. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. WHILE THESE 300 OFFICERS WERE TAKING PART IN THEIR OPERATION, MAYBE MORE THAN 30 CRIMES MAY HAVE TAKEN PLACE. WELL DONE MR OFFICER IN CHARGE. GREAT IDEA. YOU SHOULD DO THIS EVERYDAY.

Save The World, This was in Sheffield but there was 1 arrest made in a raid and crime in that locality dropped by 80% as that one person was responsible for the majority of it ... now If SYP got the right people 24 arrests could be good .. but if they just got the minor players oh welll the circle will continue ...
