DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a South Yorkshire man seven years ago reappealed to the local community for information on the anniversary of his death.
Brian Metcalfe, aged 43, of Sandygate, Wath, was found dead by a dog walker in a car park off Station Road in the town on October 14, 2001.
A post-mortem examination found he had died as a result of injuries sustained in an assault and his body had been left under a bridge where it could have lain for two days.
Police said yesterday they were convinced the key to solving the crime lay in the local community.
Det Supt Carl Sturgess, who is leading the murder hunt, said: "Despite an extensive and thorough investigation the perpetrator has not yet been brought to justice.
"Mr Metcalfe was a creature of habit and a well-known character locally. We believe that the answer to this crime lies in the local community and we would urge anyone with information to contact us."
Mr Metcalfe, a single man, was wearing a black leather jacket and black jeans when he was found.
There was a possible sighting of him the night before on West Street in Wath, although forensic examinations also suggest he could have been killed before 8am the previous day, October 12.
Anyone with information should contact Rotherham police on 01709 832662 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
