A CAT called Flint has been credited with saving his owner's life when fire spread through his Sheffield home.
The ginger moggie woke his owner at the semi-detached house in Gleadless Townend early on Sunday morning – giving him time to call the fire service and save his parents who were asleep downstairs.

"If it was not for the cat this could have been wo
rse," said Andrew Kelly, watch manager at Mansfield Road fire station.

"Two other cats ran out but then this one came back for the owner.

"It was a really bad fire but there were no injuries. It started in an upstairs sitting room and was isolated to upstairs because the owner shut all the doors."

The man, believed to be in his 50s but not named by firemen or neighbours, was waiting outside the house on Briarfield Crescent as fire crews arrived, with two pumps from Mansfield Road and one from Low Edges.

The owner did not wish to comment but is known to have escaped without injury. His parents, one of whom was bedridden, were also unscathed.

The fire service said smoking materials were responsible for the fire, which happened in an upstairs sitting room.

Smoke alarms were fitted by the crew before departing.
