RESIDENTS and businesses are being warned to be vigilant as downpours swept South Yorkshire.
The Environment Agency said today it is working closely with the Met Office after heavy rain was forecast for Yorkshire in the next couple of days.
Staff are also out checking pumping stations are operating and that trash screens on watercourses
are clear from obstructions.
Environment Agency forecasters are working with the Met Office to ensure flood warnings can be issued to give residents and businesses as much warning as possible to keep themselves and their property safe from flooding.
The Met Office is forecasting very wet weather today, with further rain due tomorrow - with up to 50mm of rain are possible in some areas today.
"We are making our normal preparations for possible flooding, and urge the public to do the same by checking any flood warnings through our website or Floodline, and through the media," said regional director Mark Sitton-Kent.
"Our workforce have been out checking that screens and water courses we look after are clear so that water can flow freely."
Anyone worried about flooding should:
• keep updated from radio or TV broadcasts or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188.
• keep in touch with neighbours top check what is happening if they are away from home.
• move valuables to a place of safety.
• keep away from floodwater, which is dangerous and may be contaminated.
