CELEBRITY plastic surgeon Jan Stanek has agreed a six-figure compensation payout to a Sheffield woman - who says she suffered a devastating stroke while under his knife.
Sheffield mum Diane Newbould says she will never recover from a facelift and liposculpture operation carried out by Mr Stanek - star of Channel 4 makeover show 10 Years Younger - at a private hospital in London in January 2002.
Mrs Newbould, now 53, formerly of Kenwood Park Road, Nether Edge, sued Mr Stanek and an anaesthetist, claiming their negligence wrecked her life and left her a severely disabled shadow of her former self.
Her counsel Simeon Maskrey QC told London's High Court Mr Stanek and the anaesthetist had agreed a substantial settlement of Mrs Newbould's case.
Although the exact amount of the payout has been kept confidential, Mrs Newbould's solicitor Janet Baker from Keeble Hawson solicitors revealed outside court it was "a significant, six-figure, sum".The settlement was agreed without any admission of liability by Mr Stanek or the anaesthetist.
Mr Stanek is considered one of the leading surgeons in his field and is well known after featuring in channel Five series Plastic Fantastic and Channel 4's 10 Years Younger.
In documents before the court, Mrs Newbould's lawyers alleged not enough account was taken of her "poor medical history" before the operation went ahead. She was obese, a heavy smoker and her medical problems included bronchitis and a history of hypertension.
They claimed she should have been told to "undergo significant lifestyle changes" - particularly to lose weight and cut down on cigarettes - before she underwent the operation.
More than six years after the operation Mrs Newbould, who was 47 when she had the surgery, still has problems speaking. Mrs Newbould and her husband recently moved to southern Spain, where she is cared for by her daughter and son-in-law.
