A MAN climbed out of his attic window onto his roof to escape from his smoke-logged home.
The man, who had been in his attic room, only discovered the fire yesterday morning when he opened the door to go downstairs and found his house filling with smoke.
He had no working smoke alarms in the property, on Shoreham Street, Highfield, so was unaware of the fire burning in his kitchen.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and then rescued the man from his roof using an aerial ladder platform.
A fault with his washing machine caused the blaze.
