LIBERAL Democrats swept to power today in Sheffield - ousting Labour from power.
The Lib Dems made six gains in the local elections giving them a majority of six on Sheffield Council.

They now have 45 councillors up from 39, while Labour have 36 down from 41 and the Greens have three up from two.

The Lib Dems won Dore, Gleadless, Hillsborough, Stocksbridge and two seats in Mosborough, while the Greens gained one in Central.

There are now no Independent or Conservative councillors in Sheffield.
High-profile casualties in the elections include the only Tory councillor Anne Smith, who lost Dore, and Labour's Terry Fox.

What do you think? Add your comment below.

Coun Paul Scriven, leader of the Lib Dems, is now set to become leader of the council.

Lib Dem leader and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg said: "This is an outstanding result for Sheffield Liberal Democrats.

"Labour's stranglehold on the North has been well and truly broken. Meanwhile, David Cameron's Tories have failed to make inroads, losing their only Sheffield seat.

"As a Sheffield MP I am especially proud that we will now be able to offer local people a real say in the way our great city is run. Labour took the people of Sheffield for granted for far too long.

"With gains in the North and the South against Labour and the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats are showing renewed momentum across the country."

...and as a local person of this great city, I look forward to the opportunity to have a real say in the way it's run.
Here's my first tenpenn'orth- don't (continue to)think motorists are stupid (as Labour did) and don't view us as a cash cow.
We are voters too, remember that!

I have to say how happy i am to see Labour lose this election. For the first time in my voting life i have voted against them. The only real reason for this change of vote is the 10p tax fiasco,as my partner is one of those hit by a doubling of her tax.Her immediate boss who is paid 3 times her wage has just recieved an extra £5oo to £600 a year in tax cuts,WELL DONE LABOUR,you really know how to cut your own throats.

Congratulations to Councillor Paul Scriven and all Liberal Democrat supporters, What a fantastic result for Sheffield,I am looking forward to consultation having some real meaning in this city, unlike the pretext we got under labour (ask the questions and if the answers are not what we want to hear we will just do it anyway), and maybe regeneration is something that will be done with people and not done to them (because we know what is best for you) as has been the case recently.

I hope that this is also reflected in the next general election and the same thing will apply accross the country. Well done labour keep cocking it up perhaps you will disappear for good

I am pleased that Jan Wilson and her hanger-ons have been defeated in the local election. The way they've treated the people and constituents of Wisewood, Hillsborough and Loxley with blatant disdain has finally come back to haunt them.

The way that Harry Harpham, Alf Meade and Janet Bragg towed the Labour Party Parliamentary line and suckered up to the Dept of Education in their illogical quest to close an excellent school, with brilliant staff and top pupils, in an area which is oversubscribed (if they Crossley-Holland hadn't fudged the catchment areas to suit their own gains!) with a sham of a "consultancy" process, against a backdrop of platitudes and rhetoric from the 3 of them has finally come back to show exactly what the constituents feel of their purgery.

Let's not also forget the Labour Council's brother-in-arms to their adventure -- Jonathan Crossley-Holland.

I'm not really worried if they choose to ignore the message this sends to them because I don't delude myself that they will continue (in opposition!!) with their "my door is always open my mind is always closed" mantra when dealing with constituents.

Long may Labour dwell in the mire of opposition.

Let's now use this excellent result for the local people to look at myriad of other viable proposals (which were simply ignored by Jan Wilson's crew) of keeping an excellent school open rather than letting the "previous" Leopold Street mob look at foisting a flawed, unconsulted political prototype on the North West of Sheffield.

All the top educational academics from the likes of Edinburgh University and the NUT were utterly amazed at the arrogance of the Labour councils "plans" for education in NW-Sheffield. They simply highlighted it as not based on real findings and more to keep the council closely aligned with Whitehall. It has been now proven after the local residents said so that leviathan 1000+ pupil schools do not give our children the best educational chances. Big

My most profound wish is that Labour are dumped on the landfill of history never to be recycled. But the Lib Dems have a lot to do to prove they can lead this city effectively. Their manifesto is pages long and they have to deliver this time.

The council's problem is really the appalling management and that needs to be sorted out. The council is a haven for the hard of thinking. The LEA is the third worst in the country thanks to their awful managers. Thankfully the Chief Exec pocketed his knighthood and jumped ship just before his political paymasters fell. So there's a chance to get some real talent into the city. Come on Lib Dems, don't let us down like you did last time.

Pleased as I am to see the demise of the Labour council, I doubt whether things will be any better under the new regime. As Bradway Lad says, if the Lib Dems want to stay in power for longer than they managed last time, they should stop treating motorists as cash cows and above all stop using OUR money to sabotage OUR roads!

Here is hoping that the new regime is far less arrogant than the defeated Labour one, with its shameful policy toward graves park and the Sheffield City Airport. We need our city to be built up, not continually loosing its valuable assets.

funny how people dont remember the lib dems last time, spending the reserves of the city,
it will not help the wisewood school mafia as the consultation process was fair, what was not fair was the way they tried to intimidate people at the public consultations, the silen majority who went to seek information found it difficult to be heard
i wonder how many of the save our schools think lib dem will keep the school open-
i bet they will not be refusing new school monies that labour worked to get
i would not trust them to manage a paryt in a brewery never mind the purse of this wonderful city of ours
but time will tell and i will look forward to saying 'well, what did you expect, i told you so'
national labour should be ashamed of themselves, who makes so many errors- i thought brown had spent so long waiting he would have some well thought out plans
anytime you want advice from one of the silent minority give me a call
