WITH warmer weather and longer nights arriving Sheffielders are being urged to take advantage of the glorious countryside on our doorsteps.
Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, strengthen bones and have a positive affect on your mood. So now could be the time to make the most of summer and get the fresh air into your lungs.
There are a variety of groups in the city and Sheffield 20s and 30s Walking Group organises walks of varying lengths and difficulties in the Peak District and around Sheffield on Saturdays and Sundays and is now keen to recruit more members.
Group chairman Lee Farmery said: "Come and join us on one of our walks. There's a really great variety on offer, from a gentle stroll along a canal to a 17-mile epic over moors and fells and everything in between. All the walks are led by experienced walk leaders who know their stuff.
"We're a friendly bunch and like to go out and socialise together too, going bowling, days out, or just down to the pub, so it's a really great way to meet new people. Then, once a month we pack up our boots and gear and head off to some of the most beautiful areas of Britain for the weekend."
Member Danielle Fortier signed up after moving back to Sheffield when she finished University.
She said: "Everyone I'd known here from before had gone their separate ways, so I joined the group to meet some like-minded people. The group is really friendly and welcoming and having such beautiful countryside only 30 minutes from the city is fantastic. The weekends away are great, I've been to places I'd not seen before and had some really great laughs!"
The group is having an intro evening for people who are interested in joining, followed by a walk to give a taster of what's on offer.
Come to the Cream café in Broomhill on Wednesday, 5pm-7pm. There will be a walk for new members around Curbar and Frogatt Edges on Saturday .
