STAFF and patients were all smiles as a newly refurbished Sheffield clinic welcomed a new community-based dental teaching unit.
Firth Park Clinic on North Quadrant Road has a new roof, a new reception area, a new ground-floor clinic for specialist dentistry surgery and a dental student teaching unit.

Peter Bateman, director of dental services at NHS Sheffield, said: "Along with our existing facility at Wheata Place, we are now providing seven outreach student placements daily.

"They gain a much wider experience of different communities' needs in comparison with the dental hospital, as well as the experience of working in an environment more like that they will work in after they qualify."

Professor Mike Lennon OBE, outreach programme manager of The University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry, said: "These surgeries represent a further step in the longstanding collaboration between the Sheffield Primary Care Trust's Dental Service and the university.

"This partnership has been hugely successful in developing dental students and dental therapists to be better prepared for practice."
