POLICE were today hunting the driver of a car involved in a Sheffield crash which killed one woman and left two passengers seriously injured
He fled, along with a male passenger, after the Volkswagen Golf he had hired apparently lost control on Abbey Lane, Beauchief, at around 2am today.

The car, which was travelling towards Chesterfield Road, smashed into two trees on the side of the
road.

A 22-year-old Sheffield woman in the back of the vehicle suffered fatal injuries. Another woman, also 22, and a man, 30, were both seriously hurt.

They were rushed by ambulance to the Northern General Hospital, where they are said to be critical.

The smash closed Abbey Lane between Bocking Lane and Abbeydale Road until just before 7am.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Two other males from the vehicle, including the driver, left the scene and enquiries are underway to identify them.

"Police are aware that the vehicle involved is a hire vehicle, and police know who it was on hire to.

"Police urgently want that person and their associate to identify themselves to the police."

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202867 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Must have hit the tree at some speed given the huge gouge marks. Drink or drugs, or excessive speed, could be behind this tragedy...
