A SECOND incinerator could be built to deal with South Yorkshire's rubbish, according to a report by Channel 4 News.
It is one of 30 locations allegedly being considered for the developments, which aim to cut the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill.
Researchers from the television station said information from campaign groups, the Environment Agency, and th
e Chartered Institute of Waste Management, led them to their conclusion.
There are currently 23 incinerators in the UK, including one in Sheffield – which has submitted a planning application for permission to bring in additional waste from areas including Barnsley and Doncaster.
But the idea of a second incinerator has been dismissed by the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils partnership, which said no decision had yet been made on how to reduce landfill.
Coun Richard Russell ,of Rotherham Council, speaking on behalf of the partnership, said: "Over recent years, all three authorities have worked hard to expand their recycling options and this has been tremendously successful.
"However, material in the 'grey bin' is currently sent to landfill, which produces methane, one of the major greenhouse gasses.
"So, we are engaged in a procurement process whereby we will ask companies to submit long-term solutions for clean and efficient ways to treat the non-recyclable waste.
"We want to prevent as much of it having to go to landfill as possible, as well as recover additional value from it through separating out further recycling and aggregates, composting, heat and energy.
"Incineration by itself is now very old hat. Indeed, the terminology has connotations of dirty, pollution-laden, careless disposal, and this is not the case with modern facilities."
He added: "It is far too early in the process to say what technology – or combination of technologies – will eventually be chosen."
