THE prospect of an all-Sheffield final to BBC hit Strictly Come Dancing moves a quick step closer this weekend as city husband and wife dancers Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova and their TV star partners Jill Halfpenny and Aled Jones join the two other surviving couples for the chance to dance for the contest trophy.
Last Saturday saw Darren and EastEnders star Jill wow the judges and win the viewing public's support with two more sizzling routines, with Lilia and Songs of Praise host Aled also receiving high scores and public support.
But with the competition g
etting tougher every week, there's still a large vote for celebrity rivals Julian Clary and Denise Lewis - and only three couples will be taking part in the final on December 11.
"I think is going to be everybody's biggest week really," said Darren as he took a short break from another tough week of rehearsal, this time for Tango and Pas Doble routines. Jill and I have always been in the first position but that could change this Saturday and none of us knows which way it will go because the standard is now so high."
Darren and Jill have now been dancing together for 12 weeks and, despite the hard work, Darren insists they're still enjoying the weekly challenge - even though he also admits he'll be relieved when it's all over.
"It will be nice when we can draw a line under it and Lilia and I can get on again with what we normally do," he said. "I can't wait to get back into the competitions again, which start in January.
"It's been funny because we're used to being together all the time but now we only see each other at the end of the day - though it does give us something to talk about!"
Darren says he still finds the best way to approach every weekend is to concentrate on the dancing.
Whatever the outcome of this weekend's show - which really does depend on the public calling and voting for their favourites - Darren and Lilia will both be back in Sheffield on Sunday.
They'll be performing a special routine at the City Limits Dancentre Born to Dance Showcase, which is being presented at the Octagon Centre on tomrrow afternoon and will feature youngsters from the school, which is run by Darren's parents.
