PATIENTS in South Yorkshire with chronic long-term illnesses are being given a £20 million government grant.
The cash will enable medics to find ways of using new technology to help patients with conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, mental health and obesity to better manage their own health.
The money has been awarded to the South Yorkshi
re NHS Partnership, led by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with both Sheffield Universities.
South Yorkshire has poorer wellbeing than any other health region in the country. Residents are more likely to smoke and be obese, and are therefore at greater risk of stroke, diabetes and breathing problems.
The £20 million award is part of an overall £64 million being split among the seven centres.
