CAMPAIGNERS including a giant spud urged Sheffield residents not to be 'car potatoes' and do their bit for the environment by using public transport.
The huge potato began its journey around South Yorkshire from Sheffield train station, calling in at transport interchanges in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

The stunt was organised as part of the 'Go Travel Challenge' set up by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, encouraging people not to be a 'car potato' and to travel by public transport.

It also aims to make people realise the benefits of getting around on foot, on their bike, or by using a car a sharing scheme.

John Ansari, marketing manager at SYPTE, said: "The Go Travel Challenge is a great opportunity for everyone who lives in South Yorkshire to think about how they get around and see how easy it can be to take more sustainable options."

The challenge is just one in a series of activities taking place in Sheffield to celebrate European Mobility Week - an international drive to inform people about sustainable travel choices - which begins on September 16.

This year's theme in South Yorkshire is Cleaner Air For All. Key events will include the annual Care4Air awards recognising the achievements of individuals, businesses and communities in improving air quality, and the Devonshire Green Festival featuring street dancers, DJs, bands, circus workshops, and professional skateboarding and BMX performances.

'In Town Without My Car Day' on Monday September 22 will also ask Sheffield residents to leave their motor at home and get around the city using alternative means of transport.

Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for sustainable development and transport, said: "Public transport can be an attractive option, and for many of us public transport, walking or cycling is the best and most sensible, healthy choice for many of the journeys we make.

"The campaign aims to encourage motorists to think about making such choices to benefit all."
