THE number of arson attacks on vehicles in South Yorkshire is down 25 per cent on last year, latest statistics reveal.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service figures show 1,680 blazes were deliberately started in vehicles between April 2007-March 2008, down from 2,056 the previous year.

The drop is attributed to arson-reduction initiatives like fire station cours
es for youths, firefighters patrolling on bikes, and education in schools.

Bob Rowland, head of prevention and protection with the service, said: "I am very pleased at the reduction in vehicle fires, which is recognition of the efforts of our arson reduction team, firefighters, and station and district managers.

"Reducing anti-social behaviour fires is, of course, one of our top priorities.

"We, along with our partner agencies, will continue to work very hard to further improve on our performance."
