A 77-year-old widow is being plagued by irate callers after falling victim to a major Sheffield dialling code change introduced apparently without warning.
New 01143 numbers are being issued after all usable combinations under the 01142 code 'ran out'. One has been assigned to the GP out-of-hours service at the Northern General Hospital.

But people are continuing to dial the '2' before punching in the seven-digits of the new number that starts with a '3'.

Anguished people with sick relatives are connecting to Joyce Godbehere's home in Sandygate, Sheffield, demanding help at all hours of the night.

Daughter Julie, aged 47, said her mum had had a woman screaming down the phone that her husband was unconscious, others had demanded an urgent visit from a GP.

She'd even had to explain the change to a GP who rang by mistake, Julie added.

Were you aware of Sheffield's 0114 3 numbers? Has it been given enough publicity? Let us know what you think by adding a comment below.

And after a weekend away Joyce's answer machine was jammed with messages, including three from the same hysterical man pleading for help.

Julie added: "It's been absolutely horrendous for mum, she's being harassed and her nerves are shot, she doesn't need this.

"It's not just mum who is suffering, people aren't getting the medical service they are entitled to. And her elderly friends are confused when they hear her new answering machine message because it informs people wanting a GP that they've misdialled - although it seems they're the only ones who actually listen to it.

"The whole thing is a mess, why hasn't this been publicised? The last time there was a number change it was drummed into us for a year.

"And why has anyone allowed numbers to be issued that are so similar to the old ones?"

Joyce's provider BT had offered to change her number, but she had refused.

Julie added: "She's had that number for over 50 years, if it changes there's a real chance she'll lose contact with people."

Helen Stevens of NHS Sheffield said they had been allocated 1,000 numbers by NTL Telewest starting with 01143.

The NHS had offered to pay to inform all of Mrs Godehere's contacts if she changed her number, she added. Ms Stevens said: "I'm afraid changing our number isn't simple, it would be a massive operation costing thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money.

"And changing it to another of our assigned numbers will only give the same problem to someone else. It seems we are one of the first organisations to get an 01143 number and people just aren't used to it."

She had asked BT if a message could be put on Mrs Godbehere's line about the number change but a BT spokesman said this had proved impossible.

An NTL spokesman said it was inappropriate to make any comment.

An Ofcom spokeswoman said: "The dialling code for Sheffield is 0114. Ofcom allocates phone numbers in blocks to communications providers who then make them available for use to homes, businesses and organisations.

"All 0114 2 numbers have been allocated and the next set of numbers that Ofcom has made available is 0114 3. Both 0114 2 and 0114 3 are now being used widely in the Sheffield area."

It must be really frightening for this lady. Can you imagine being fast asleep and the phone rings and when you answer a desperate person is screaming for help. How can you possibly explain to them that they have a wrong number and multiply their problem a thousand times. This is sheer negligence and someone should pay this lady a large sum of money to compensate for the upset she through no fault of her own is suffering.

Who are Ofcom kidding? 01143 widely used, this is the first Ive heard of this number change I asked all my friends at work and not one had heard about this.
I also agree with 'Handworth' this lady needs compenensating for the trouble and upset she has to put up with.
Get your act together Ofcom, NHS & NTL SORT this out and start informing the public properly on these changes.

I have had a 3 number now for quite a long time. The only problem I have is that people question it. Many do not dial it because they think it is the wrong number. The biggest was the council itself. They were supposed to ring me one day but did not even try to ring the number, When I rang them back I was told that the number I gace them did not exist. I told them it did and they even argued the fact it did not. I got angry with them and told them to try to ring the number now. They tried again. They said they could not get through to me. They kept putting the 2 in front despite me telling them not to several times. Eventually I managed to be connected to a manager. I asked the manager to ring me without putting a 2 in front. WOWEEEE he got through to me. Then he said I should contact my exchange and tell them this number is wrong to ask them to check it out. What a set of morons they were. The number 0114 3****** Not 0114 23******

I work in the NHS so I've been aware of this for a while now, but one of the problems is that people think the code for Sheffield is 01142 not 0114. That's because they changed the dialling code and put a 2 in front of our phone numbers at around the same time
It hasn't been publicised at all and when NHS started using the numbers we were all confused !!!!

Astonishing.
Most probably there was a small campaign on radio hallam, but who listens to that nowadys. I often miss out on finding about local markets and shows because they are only advertised there.

Referring to comments 5 & 7:

My experiences with people from all walks suggests that many have trouble following instructions, even when the instructions are simple and are spelled out. Indeed, years ago when I was in servicing, one of the first questions we asked a client was, "Have you read the manual?" In this case the phenomenon of instruction dyslexia is made worse because hardly anyone has been told of this change.

And, it is quite true that people think the code for Sheffield is 01142 not 0114. Indeed, I have often heard that format given out on Radio Sheffield and seen it printed on flyers and in the press as, for example 01142 777777.

In conclusion, I think it will take more publicity and a year or two for this change to take effect. No consolation for those receiving wrong calls however.
