AN ANGRY Sheffield dad has complained his two-year-old daughter was left terrified after being shouted at by a driver on a city centre bus.
Kevan Smith, aged 51, of Manor, said he was appalled at the treatment of his youngest child Olivia on the FreeBee service.

Mr Smith said he was shouted and sworn at when he confronted the driver.

He also claimed the driver was not paying attention to the road ahead.

Mr Smith said: "My wife Violet and I, along with our youngest daughter Olivia, were travelling from Moorfoot to the Markets.

"Olivia was sitting with me at the front of the bus and when we arrived in Pond Street she decided she wanted to sit on her own on the opposite side behind the driver.

"I stopped her from doing this and both Violet and I told her she could not run around on the bus. Then the driver took it upon himself to bawl at her: 'You are not running around on my bus, it's not a playground so sit down'. She was terrified.

"I said to the driver he should leave me to control my child and in future could he aim any remarks to me and not directly to a young child.

"He continued to argue with me as we left Pond Street and was shouting at me while looking into his passenger mirror inside the bus and paying no attention to the road in front of him.

"I pointed out what he was doing constituted driving without due care and attention.

"As we got off the bus at the old court building in Castle Street, I politely asked the driver if anything like this happened again I would appreciate it if he spoke to me and not shout at my child."

Mr Smith said he was then sworn at – as he was holding Olivia in his arms.

"I was very offended. Plenty of passengers heard him both on the bus and at the bus stop. I would like to point out I never swore at him,"
he added.

Mr Smith complained about his treatment to TM Travel, which runs the FreeBee service, Sheffield Council cabinet member for transport Coun Ian Auckland and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

The driver was temporarily removed from duty pending a disciplinary hearing.

Paul Harding, operations director for Halfway-based TM Travel, said: "The type of behaviour described is not acceptable, and will not be tolerated by our company.

"Relevant action has been taken and a warning recorded on the driver's file.

"I feel the incident has now been fully dealt with."

But if the kid is not sat down & the driver has to brake sharply, where will the kid end up ? Control your kids on public transport & make sure they are in a safe travelling position.

"Olivia was sitting with me at the front of the bus and when we arrived in Pond Street she decided she wanted to sit on her own on the opposite side behind the driver.

"I stopped her from doing this and both Violet and I told her she could not run around on the bus.

What is it with bus-drivers and their attitude?
Many a time i have seen pensioners or women with young kids board a bus and the driver sets off before they are seated.
Kevan Smith,I'm glad you reported this idiot!Well done.

Typical attitude of 50% of today,s bus drivers I,m afraid Kevan,no smiles, I think they must be bred for the job.

Not every driver is like him thank goodness.Having been a bus driver and had a good relationship with the passangers. For some one like that driver the old buses would be better where a conductor was onboard, they would have had a better approach to your daughter Kevin.

It's a shame when this kind of thing happens. I myself have heard drivers yell racist abuse at families who had left the bus many times, on some occasions with school children on-board. What kind of example is this setting to them?

Thankfully, most drivers are not like this (I would tend to disagree with the figure that half of bus drivers are rude), and most are friendly, smile at passenger and appreciate being thanked as you leave the bus.

My last two bus journeys were a complete contrast: outward journey, nice oldish chap, thoughtful, good driver; return journey - highly stressed youngish bloke, no consideration for older passengers, mums with pushchairs, seemed to have difficulty with the English language. and as for the cost...

There are some decent bus drivers, but in my experience the majority are grim faced, anti-social jobsworths who usually end up bus driving because they are incapable of gaining any other employment. I once remonstrated with one who was needlessly blocking the road. He had no regard for his passengers and purposely continued his childish sit in for a further 5 minutes.Ill never forget his final comment- "I can afford to sit here all day mate, im on £7 a hour" hahahahahahah, still tickles me!

The freebee is a waste of space and money!

When I tried to get on it, the bus driver just waved at me and sped off!

Well my personal thought is bus drivers have a difficult job these days, with all the abuse they get, excpecialy on certain routes,I am not sticking up for the driver but there are two sides to a story. If the little one was free to rome around the bus well I think the driver did right as the parents was not keeping control of the matter. If the bus had to come to a stop and the little one was injured ? What then, Everyone should be sat unill the bus comes to a stop. What I dont think was right was the swearing If it did happen.
