THE first ever conference has taken place between organisations representing Sheffield's pensioners and young people.
Members of Sheffield Elders' Congress and members of the Youth Council met at the Millennium Galleries for the event, which both sides said was a great success. About 20 representatives of each organisation were present.

Emma Hinchcliffe, aged 19,
treasurer of Sheffield Youth Council, said: "I had the view that old people thought young people cause trouble, and it is quite like that in the area where I live on the Manor.

"But they all had the view we should work together. We talked about what older people could do for us and what we could do to help them."

Emma added the two organisations now plan to hold more meetings in the future - plus work on other ideas including putting on a play together, and working together as part of new community assemblies.

Jane Tanser, project officer for Sheffield Fifty Plus, part of the Elders' Congress, said: "We found it enjoyable and informative. I think everyone was surprised by how much they enjoyed it. We found there was actually a lot in common between people of the different age groups."
