HAPPY Birthday Nelson - from the people of Sheffield.
Nelson Mandela celebrates his 90th birthday today and Sheffield is one of the many places sending its best wishes.

There is a birthday book in the Town Hall reception area, which everyone is invited to sign until Friday July 25, as the official city celebration and recognition of his birthday.

Council leader Coun Paul Scriven and Lord Mayor Coun Jane Bird were the first to sign the book and leave their birthday greetings.

Coun Scriven said: "I know that the people of Sheffield will want to send their good wishes and birthday messages to Mr Mandela.

"He is a huge political figure who commands such respect and goodwill. He is an inspiration for democracy, justice and courage."

The book will be sent to Action for Southern Africa, which has agreed to send all the cards on to Nelson Mandela.

As well as the birthday book, libraries at Burngreave, Central, Crystal Peaks, Darnall, Ecclesall, Highfield, Park, Upperthorpe and Walkley will be displaying books, DVDs and music relating to apartheid, Mandela and Southern Africa.
