A PLEA made by a 10-year-old boy has resulted in Sheffield Council agreeing to extend the length of a ban on youths gathering in a troubled neighbourhood.
Shoaib Amin, of Fir Vale, spoke at last week's full meeting of the authority, calling for a dispersal order to be extended an extra two months to cover Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Council leader Paul Scriven offered to meet with the youngster and other residents who accompanied him to discuss the request.

Now the order covering Fir Vale, Page Hall and Wensley, which allows police to break up groups of two or more people gathered on the streets, has been extended to expire in November.

It had been due to end this week.

The decision was welcomed by Sheffield Brightside MP and former Home Secretary David Blunkett, who represents the area.

He said: "It's amazing what a 10-year-old can do and I'm just glad Shoaib is too young to stand for Parliament, or I would clearly be in trouble at the next election!

"This is a serious matter and it's a pity it has taken such hard lobbying by the local community and myself to get Paul Scriven to see sense."

Coun Ibrar Hussain, who represents Burngreave and knows Shoaib, added: "These residents have been pushing the Lib Dem council for a continuation of this ban on youths gathering for months now, and Labour have backed them all the way.

"I'm so glad this community campaign has finally paid off."

Sheffield Council leader Coun Paul Scriven added: "We have always said that if communities and the police came and asked for an extension to the orders and there were reasonable grounds to extend them then we would do so.

"We believe it is important that we work on longer term measures to address the primary causes of anti-social behaviour in these areas, because as we have said repeatedly, these orders are only a sticking plaster solution.

"We have held discussions with the police and others and we will be bringing forward a new long-term approach to tackling anti social behaviour."

Well don, Shoaib, and to all who participated in this campaign.

Councillor Scriven, now you can see what the people of Sheffield want, extend the Section 30 order to cover all of Sheffield, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Very well done lad. But I fear the problem is going to be finding the police to want to be in the area to start with.
Police cant even see the cars on the double yellow lines even around the traffic lights making it dangerous never mind see more than 2 people stood about. They go through the area with blue lights on so they don't have to stop.

I'm sure that this lad wasn't spurred on or coached by his elders in any way, shape or form. At all. Not one bit. No siree Bob.

And by the way Mr Blunkett, Seeing as you represent an area in which a slightly soiled duvet with a red rosette could get elected, I think you're safe to carry on doing whatever it is you actually do.

Unless flytippers dump a duvet fitting the description above .....

We have a reputation of being a friendly city, yet ban 'gathering'. If people are gathering causing trouble, then arrest and punish them for causing trouble.

All a dispersal order does is intimidate law abiding people, move the law breakers a short distance away and allow for the logging of their minor crimes rather than the prosecution them.

Its good that the young lad had the guts to stand up and say something, although its a fairly condemning statement about the councillors of Sheffield when it takes a sympathy plea by a child to assert law and order onto the streets.

I have nothing but utter contempt for the useless councillors of Sheffield.

Not very often i agree with someone of the opposite 'club'.....But comment #6 is absolutely right.

Im sure there are many of you out there wishing you had the same enforcement in your troubled bit of Sheffield, and i can side with #1's comment too !!

This boy stood up and told Cllrs what he thought. Alongside a lot of other issues he has opinions on, he also has an opinion on this particular issue and has voiced it well.

People should be proud that the community can come together like this and be ONE.

Well done young man!

I can only hope that printing Shoaib's full name won't prove to be a mistake by The Star. The police may be lazy, corrupt and useless, but the thugs out there are much more on the ball. They won't be "too busy" to pay Shoaib's family a call, although the police will doubtless be as effective as a chocolate fireguard at protecting them.
