CHILDREN'S minister Beverley Hughes visited a Peak District youth project to announce a £4.5 million investment in year-round activities for young people.
The funding promised for the next three years will allow youngsters to experience adventure, arts, media projects and residential summer camps.
Ms Hughes made the announcement during her visit to a Do it 4 Real project at Edale, run by the Youth H
ostel Association.
Another set of camps will be run this autumn for young people from deprived areas and will encourage them to develop social and emotional skills as well as build understanding and appreciation of others from different backgrounds.
Themes covered will include gang activity, anti-racism and celebrating diversity.
"I am pleased this new funding will give hundreds of young people the opportunity to take part in lots of positive activities," Ms Hughes said.
"We want to make sure young people have plenty of interesting things to do, are kept active and engaged, and out of trouble.
"Running these projects in the evenings and weekends will help us to tackle those young people who are turning to drink, crime or anti-social behaviour simply because they are bored," she added.
