Keeping fit takes a steely determination - and it’s in bountiful supply at one of Sheffield’s oldest gyms.
Exercise fanatics are celebrating the dawn of a new era for Physical Culture Gym, which first opened at Stocksbridge’s steelworks in 1932.
The future was in doubt when its Smithy Hill premises off Manchester Road was earmarked for the £42 million Fox Valley housing and retail project.
But developers keen to preserve the gym’s heritage stepped in and offered the historic gym a new home in the North Office Block on Hunshelf Road.
Treasurer Paul Wragg said: “With the help of Tata and Dransfield Properties we have been given a new era, and to still be here in a works building is just fantastic.
“The new gym is better laid out and we can use the space much more effectively. We are open to everybody so we’re very keen to hear from new members who want to join us.”
