SHEFFIELD is to stage a snooker tournament with a difference and organisers are calling for players to take part.
The tournament for people with learning difficulties has been organised by snooker pro Stephen Harrison.

He is urging snooker lovers from across the region to sign up for the South Yorkshire Open competition.

First round matches will be held to
ward the end of March with the final stages culminating in the same week as the finals of the World Snooker Championships at The Crucible in April.

Stephen says the tournament is intended to highlight the importance recreational facilities play in helping those who suffer from learning difficulties.

"The South Yorkshire Open is part of our campaign to bring snooker to all by providing new premises for groups and individuals who often feel socially excluded.

"The campaign hopes to raise £40,000 which will go towards equipment and a new playing arena.

Competitors must be 16 or over and the tournament is free.Certificates will go to all players and prizes will be awarded to those who reach the quarter finals.

"You don't have to have played before", says Stephen, "it's more about taking part.

"All we ask is that competitors have been registered as having learning difficulties. And that they love snooker."

To get involved as a tournament sponsor or to find out more call Stephen on 0114 251 7517.
