SHEFFIELD must not lose confidence in the economy, was the warning from one Sheffield MP.
David Blunkett, who represents Sheffield Brightside, said: "It is critical we talk up our economy, encourage people to have confidence to spend and, above all, for companies to be prepared to invest in the future and for banks to lend them the money
which makes that possible.
"Sheffield has a proud history of craftsmanship, of enterprise and of innovation. Never before have we needed to take on such a challenge outside wartime conditions, but I'm absolutely certain that the people of Sheffield and the businesses on which they rely for employment will rise to the challenge."
In one week, Sheffield has hosted visits from Prince Charles, Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Secretary Lord Mandelson and Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon.
Mr Blunkett said: "These visits are signs of how important Sheffield is to economic recovery, and the Government's plans for restoring confidence.
"On Monday, I joined Prince Charles at Forgemasters which has not only pulled back from the brink of catastrophe at the time of the floods last year, but has risen like a phoenix from the ashes.
"Forgemasters has plans for recruiting additional workers, for winning new markets, for taking on the world.
"That is what the bold measures taken by Gordon Brown, and reinforced by Peter Mandelson today, intend to achieve for Britain as a whole."
