250mph Sheffield to London rail link approved

SHEFFIELD is to be included in plans for a high-speed rail link from London, the Government announced today.

South Yorkshire politicians and business figures welcomed the news after a long campaign for Sheffield to be included in 30 billion plans to revamp the national rail network.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said the scheme was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to transform the Victorian rail network.

He said the 250mph train route will run from London to Birmingham, before splitting into two lines - one going to Sheffield and Leeds, and the other to Manchester.

The new trains will dramatically cut journey times to the capital - but it will be several years before commuters will benefit from the super-fast plans.
