1,000 swine flu cases a day fear
SHEFFIELD could see up to 1,000 new cases of swine flu a day by the end of summer, experts predict.
Latest figures show that 73 people in the city have had the virus which is mainly affecting children and young adults.
But, as the bug spreads across the UK health chiefs believe the national infection rate could soar to 100,000 new cases per day by August and September - with a rate of 1,000 a day in Sheffield.
Health bosses say that although the number of infections is expected to increase, services in Sheffield are geared up to deal with the illness which is mild and lasts for just a few days.
Dr Paul Redgrave, deputy director of public health at NHS Sheffield said: "We know that people are concerned about this but the illness is milder than usual winter flu. Our services are prepared for an expected surge of flu in the next couple of months.
"The key message though is that in most people this is a mild illness, symptoms often last only a couple of days and then the vast majority of people will be well again."
He said that extensive plans have been made to manage swine flu, involving the city's 300 GPs and other health services.
The virus is currently affecting younger people in Sheffield - with under 20s accounting for 63 per cent of all confirmed cases - probably as they've had less exposure to seasonal flu in the past so have less immunity than older people. The oldest confirmed case in Sheffield is a 53-year-old.
As swine flu is now spreading the Government has abandoned plans to contain the spread of the virus as routine swabbing of suspected cases has been stopped and close contacts are no longer being traced and given antivirals.
The focus is now on treating people who become ill and those diagnosed with swine flu are being prescribed Tamiflu which helps to reduce symptoms and the length of illness.
The antiviral medication is also being given to people in the same household who are in 'at risk' groups for flu such as those with chest problems, pregnant women and under fives.
Anyone who suspects they have swine flu should go online and check their symptoms on www.nhs.uk, or call the Swine Flu information line on 0800 1513513.
They can then call their local GP who will be able to provide a clinical diagnosis and advice on treatment over the phone. Alternatively contact NHS Direct on 08454647 for advice.
