£25,000 boost for new blind centre

A STATE-of-the-art new centre being built in Sheffield for blind and partially-sighted people has received a £25,000 boost.

The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind aims to raise 400,000 to equip and operate the new facility being built on Mappin Street, Sheffield.

The society provides support and care for almost 3,000 blind and partially sighted people across the city.

The Mappin Street centre will house an IT training room, a health and beauty room, a library, and a domestic training area to encourage clients to eat well and cook for themselves.

The 25,000 donation came from Westfield Health. Society spokeswoman Sue Coggin said: "We are extremely grateful. It has given our fundraising efforts a huge boost, taking us one step closer to our goal.

"More than 100 people start to lose their sight every day, so the charity needs to expand its services to cope with increased numbers.

"Our new centre will provide a fresh and exciting facility offering a wide range of services to help and care for blind and partially sighted people in Sheffield."

The society is now planning fundraising events including a golf day, race night and an abseil to help meet the 400,000 target. To get involved call 0114 251 9643.
