£115,000 fine for fatal platform collapse firm
HEFTY fines have been levied against two firms over the collapse of a platform at a Sheffield office block which killed one man and seriously injured three others.
Painter Tony Bottomley died, while Peter Wilson, Dale Howard and Anthony Glossop suffered multiple serious injuries.
They were stood on a cradle which plunged from the side of St James office building, Campo Lane, in 2003, when a rusty bracket gave way.
Apollo Cradles, of Carlton, Barnsley, which owned the platform, was fined 115,000 - equivalent to a third of the value of its assets - and ordered to pay 45,000 costs after being found guilty of health and safety offences at a trial.
Bradway Construction, of Meersbrook, Sheffield, who rented the cradle from Apollo while revamping the building, pleaded guilty to a health and safety offence and was fined 25,000, plus 18,000 costs.
The sentences were handed out by Judge Patrick Robertshaw at Sheffield Crown Court.
