A CHARITY is to help South Yorkshire schoolchildren learn about their African counterparts, thanks to £148,000 in funding.
Village Aid, based in Bakewell, will use the money to introduce its Growing Global project into rural schools across four counties - South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, North Staffordshire and Cheshire.

The project gives youngsters the chance to learn ab
out African children, share personal experiences, and help dispel some of the myths about poverty through a website which connects the children to their peers in west Africa.

Village Aid drama education co-ordinator Helen Hunter said: "Getting out into schools to develop children's global education is vital, which we'll do through creative ways such as theatre and storytelling.

"Growing Global will look at the ways schoolchildren's lives are connected to their peers in Africa, such as going to schools, living with family and friends, but we also want to highlight the differences, things we often take for granted such as good living conditions, health care, education and constant access to food and water."

The charity netted the cash from The Department for International Development.
