A FRAUDSTER has been jailed for 16 months – for illegally claiming almost £48,000 in housing benefit over 14 years.

Tair Matloob, aged 44, of Grange Road, Rotherham, was sentenced by a judge at Sheffield Crown Court after he was prosecuted by Rotherham Council.

The court heard Matloob was claiming housing benefit on a property that was actually owned by a relative.

Matloob had earlier pleaded guilty at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court to nine offences of making false housing benefit claims between 1998 and March this year.

Coun Jahangir Akhtar, deputy leader of Rotherham Council, said: “This is a significant sentence and one that again shows we are serious about pursuing and countering benefits fraud in Rotherham.”
