FOOTBALL yobs are thought to have been behind two mass brawls in Doncaster town centre which left men injured, police have revealed.

Detectives say both incidents are thought to have been related to the Doncaster Rovers v Leicester, on Saturday afternoon, even though one of the outbreaks of violence was while the match was going on.

Fans of both clubs are thought to have been involved in the trouble, according to police.

The first incident took place on Hall Gate at about 1.20pm.

Around 20 men, thought to be aged between 20 and 40, were all involved in a fight. Six men were arrested for public order offences and have been bailed. Minor injuries were sustained by some of the men involved.

The second incident took place on St George’s Gate at approximately 4.20pm – while the Championship game was still being played at the Keepmoat Stadium. A further 15 men, of similar ages to those involved in the earlier violence, were involved in another fight.

Officers are trying to find out why the second outbreak of violence was happening during the match.

Another six men were arrested for public order offences and have been bailed. Minor injuries were sustained by some of the men involved.

Police say they believe all those who were injured in the incident had been involved in the violence.

No property was damaged during the violence.

Det Cons Peter Muir, who is investigating the incidents, said: “This type of behaviour is not acceptable. Football hooliganism is generally not a problem in Doncaster and the majority of football matches take place without any issues occurring.

“These people have ruined an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for the general public in town by behaving violently and it will not be tolerated.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed either incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.”

Anyone who can offer any further information, witnessed either incident, or who knows the identity of anyone involved, is asked to contact the police on 0114 220 2020 quoting incident number 533 of April 30.

The match between Rovers and Leicester was the final home game of the season for Rovers at the Keepmoat, and finished in a 1-1 draw.

Rovers went into the game needing a point to guarantee they were not relegated into League One.

Leicester went into the game with an outside chance of qualifying for the promotion play-off places.
