'007' GP aiming to clear his name

By Richard Marsden A 'FANTASIST' Sheffield doctor struck off after being deemed unfit to practise is challenging the decision in the High Court.

Junior hospital doctor Sushant Varma, of Mulehouse Road, Crookes, was thrown out of the profession by the General Medical Council over allegations he behaved with "premeditated dishonesty."

A hearing in September was told the 34-year-old changed his name to James Bond, lied about appearing on TV dating show Blind Date, and claimed a film was being made about his life.

The GMC was told he also pretended to be a journalist who planned to write about a clutch of made-up bravery awards.

Dr Varma studied medicine at The University of Sheffield from 1992-2001 and was a junior doctor in North Cheshire until 2003, when he claims he was "forced out" of his post.

He lost a claim for constructive dismissal at an employment tribunal but has since won an appeal against the decision because documents in his defence were not considered.

The GMC's action was taken following the original tribunal ruling.

But, in a submission to the High Court, lawyers for Dr Varma claimed the medical watchdog's decision was unfair on four grounds. The case is due to be head later this year at a date to be fixed.

Dr Varma said: "I now hope to clear my name and go to work abroad."

At his tribunal Dr Varma admitted he had told lies about his personal life but said he did not believe it had any bearing on his medical training.
