YOU'VE got to wonder whether Benny Andersson and Björn Kristian Ulvæus had any idea what they were getting into all those years ago when they penned songs like Waterloo as young men back in Sweden.
Far from simply gracing the world's airwaves, the music with which they fuelled the pop juggernaut that was ABBA have provided employment for thousands, be they promoters of retro club nights or the dozens of tribute bands.
Copycat bands must also g
rateful that ABBA no longer tour – in spite of numerous offers to re-form – as there's a seemingly unfaltering demand to be met. The band still shift around 2m records a year.
One of the largest and most authentic tributes to the Eurovision legends is ABBA The Show, a multi-million-pound touring show that does more than don a few costumes.
Currently on a world tour that takes in Sheffield Arena next Wednesday, this two-hour production includes the National Symphony Orchestra of London, conducted by Matthew Freeman, and musicians from ABBA's original 1970s line-up.
The official fan club described it as "Absolutely the best ABBA since ABBA".
As you might expect, ABBA The Show centres around four singers. Collectively known as Waterloo, this Swedish group look, dance and sound the same as Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida.
